Notes on Practice -- studio work③

As, the last term, I was suggested to think of the background of the whole painting. I decided to make a sketch of my painting. I know background is important for the whole picture. I believe that the color of the background must match with the others in one painting. The original photo is an old opera stage in my hometown. This stage now has became a simple spot and not for opera any more.

Red represents lucy, happyness, prosperous in Chinese culture. Red is also the main color of this traditional buildings. Black and white is the standard blendend in my hometown. I decided to keep these color from the original photo. Yellow and gold represent the symbol of emperor in my country. But I can easily see gold and red in a festival event in recent day. So I choose gold as the backgroud color.

There are lots of empty space in my painting. Empty space brings people the chance of imagination. Memory is unclear, when we visit somewhere, we also can not remember everything which we saw. And at most of time, people can not ever see everything. I think that colors, basic shapes are easier to get when we see something.

Empty space is the important element in Chinese art. I am planning to bring this element into my paintings. And also, I am finding the balance between the empty space and painting itself. I will also get inspiraition from some paper-cuts and illustrations.
