Artist Statement

I use oil and acrylic as material and painting on canvas. I use photographs, most of which are taken by myself, as the original resource for my painting.

These are a series of works which combine oil and acrylic. I am trying to create paintings with my personal visual languages. My painting style lies between figuration and abstraction. I tend to combine the elements of Chinese painting with oil painting in my work. The high key colors from my works are strong and the intention is to provoke an emotional reaction in the viewer. I think personality and the emotion are two key elements of a painting. I believe that painting can reflect the state of mind of the individual artist. As there are abstract elements in my paintings, I hope that  viewers may sometimes have the different opinions of me. Actually I hope viewers can form their own understanding of my work.

Basically, the relationship between time, photographs and painting is the main issue in my series of work. We all commonly know that one of the most important functions of a camera is recording the world objectively. In my point of view, compared with camera, which can be objective and functional, painting involves a unique emotional process from its creator. Painting nowadays has improved to be more diversified and includes a creation resulting from a information process which be done by human beings. I think that the images taken by a camera are more like few specific clips from the whole flow of time. Painting is the combination of human mind, time and color-matching. Back to my works, all of my paintings are based on photographs. I use them as the start point to get my inspirations. I tend to record my experience with my own painting language and make a tree of my life. I use the different color and brush-making which inspire from few Chinese paintings.

My inspirations are usually from what I see and what I have. To support my series of paintings, I research works from Karin Mamma Andersson, Mark H Wilson and other relevant contemporary artists. Paintings by Gerchard Richter and Peter Doig also influence me. The book by Ralph Rugoff (‘The Painting of Modern Life: 1960s to Now’) give me great advice about the relationship between contemporary artists and photographic images. I also research Action Painting through its brush styles to understand more how emotions work on painting.
